[00:00:01] If Jesus personally invited you to a banquet, would you accept or decline his invite? I'm Alnesha, the host of this show, GloriBites. GloriBites is a short podcast that encouraged women to taste and see that the lore is good and blessed are you as you take refuge in him.
[00:00:45] Today on our Red Letter Challenge we are in the book of Luke 14, we see the importance of being humble. We also will see the importance of accepting Jesus invite why there is still time and we'll take a look at the cost of being a true disciple of Jesus.
[00:01:03] Okay, so Luke 14 starts out with Jesus going to the house of the Pharisees. No one is going to be watched. He asked them, is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?
[00:01:20] Normally it was them that was asking the questions and this is Jesus flipping it back on them like okay so what would you all do in this case?
[00:01:28] And they were made silent so Jesus healed this man who has been dealing with this swelling and he acts the Pharisees. If this was your son or your ox that had failed into a will, wouldn't you pull them out immediately?
[00:01:44] And nobody said anything so that was the opening portion of that scripture. Next he begins to teach about the importance of humility using the parable that you know if you receive an invitation to a wedding feast when it's time to take your seat.
[00:02:02] So we're going to try to sit in the highest place of honor but sit in the lowest place because when you choose the highest place you bear the rest of being humiliated because the host could tell you to get up to move for someone who was higher than you.
[00:02:15] But when you sit in the lower place it gives you an opportunity to be able to be moved up.
[00:02:20] This is really good because a lot of times when we think that we can result ourselves to a better position and it may not be time yet we best be in humility so that when it's time.
[00:02:29] For God to move us to the greater position he has that opportunity but don't place yourself higher. I don't know other starting from the bottom and I make it to the top but that's literally I know that's probably not the best analogy because that's a secular rap song.
[00:02:48] But if you think of it like that, that guy has to be the one to do the elevation. And then he says in the scripture for everyone who is awesome self will be humble like is either get humble, be humble or get humble.
[00:03:02] Whoever humble himself will be as tall to it so we have to be in that place of humility and it's not just about you making yourself look like you a humble person.
[00:03:13] The humility is all about service and using your gifts for Christ. So who is it that you are trying to impress in these seats of honoring your life versus being humble? We must wait for Jesus to his autism, not the other way around.
[00:03:30] Okay, so then he says you know in the next portion is like basically when you have a lunch and a banquet don't invite people who can return the favor to return the invite instead.
[00:03:43] Invite the people who are poor crippled lane blind and then you will be blessed and then you will be repay at the resurrection of the righteous.
[00:03:51] So in saying that it's easier to be around people who you know can't return the favor but what about doing something for somebody who has absolutely nothing to give in return.
[00:04:04] A man at the table says blessed is he who will eat at the feast of the kingdom and so Jesus then answers in another parable.
[00:04:12] He says a certain man was prepared for a banquet and he sent his servant out to inform that it was time for in the banquet was ready.
[00:04:22] So in that time it was known to give out to the invitation symbol of how we have say the date now you wait for the RSVP, you know who come in so these people had originally accepted it but now they have changed their mind.
[00:04:35] So God sent Jesus in that same form to invite everybody to let us know that the kingdom of God is ready.
[00:04:43] But just like these people we about to see that there was you have to have a response to the invitation so they may excuse it's like I need to go test out my oxygen I need to go look at my field I just bought I got married.
[00:04:57] So they was delaying and denying the greatest invitation of all to be at the table with Jesus.
[00:05:05] So denying God's invitation and making excuses for the greatest invitation you can get and so for us it is the greatest invitation to be able to have salvation to be able to sit at the great feast at the end of this lifetime that we see in spin and eternity at the table.
[00:05:26] And around having the presence of God we have to accept the invitation.
[00:05:32] So I want to ask you are you making excuses to respond to his call on your life maybe you have accepted invitation but you're not walking with him anymore you're not walking as closely as you desire.
[00:05:44] It's important to also share this invitation because once it's pool which we'll see next there's no access to the banquet so the servant goes out and report with the master said you know what these people were saying yeah we come in and the master got angry.
[00:06:01] He said well then go offer it to the people in the street to pour the lame the blind so the servant does that he comes back and he's like there's still room for more people so then the master sent him out to the country.
[00:06:13] And it was like make them come in so that my house would be full and I tell you not one of the ones who was originally invited that had all these excuses they will not get a taste there is going to be people who will not be at the table who have rejected Jesus over and over.
[00:06:33] There is no excuse for rejectting Jesus at all. I mean there's no other way to have eternity is no excuse like we see all these excuses in different ways.
[00:06:45] So what's family son was work like what work excuses do you have for not following Jesus or what family excuses you know what are you waiting on if you have not accepted the invitation.
[00:06:58] He turns to the crowd and he was like you must live your mother your father your wife your children your brother sister everybody.
[00:07:05] To be my disciple so it's Jesus over everything and everyone he said to you got to be willing to take up your cross daily otherwise you cannot be my disciple in that day when it was a crucifixion the person had to carry their own cross.
[00:07:20] Guys done all the work at the cross for us, but we still have a responsibility to daily take up our cross and to follow him. He gives these two stories one of the considering the cost of building something.
[00:07:33] That you got to make sure that you have everything you need for building it to finish it otherwise you might get laughed at humiliated and say look at this the person who started this can't even finish it.
[00:07:44] That is the example of being able to follow guy you got to be able to follow him and hold heartedly following him not deal with that a little bit.
[00:07:53] Just like this person who's building it like I don't have enough material I can't finish the job you have to be all in so then at the second picture that he gives us is a king who's going to work war he got to know that if his army is sufficient for the battle that he's about to face and then that same way he says in that same way.
[00:08:11] You got to make sure you read it to follow me and give up everything because once you follow me I need your whole heart I need your whole committed relationship to me total submission to Christ and taking him seriously and taking the rest of this world including your family including your work and all the things taking all that stuff that you see in this life and holding it loosely.
[00:08:33] Next he says that salt is good it makes things flavorful but once it loses its saltiness it's gone out it's useless for the kingdom of God and so likewise with. with our faith that we are called to.
[00:08:48] To be salty use both to be sprinkling salt on people add some flavor of the gospel to this.
[00:08:55] Unseasoned world that we live in and so but today many Christians like they lack flavor they blend right in with the world and once you lose that saltiness he said it's worthless that is basically to be thrown away in the manure power and so a useless Christian.
[00:09:13] How are you helping the kingdom like how can you. It's the kingdom of God if you're not willing to sprinkle salt sprinkle your salt to those who are in your spirit at your spirit of influence.
[00:09:29] You know salt is a preservative right so as I was thinking unlike we suppose to flavor the world but a preservative is to keep something.
[00:09:40] You know fresh and not go stale so we are to preserve the gospel of truth so I want to ask you how salty of you.
[00:09:48] How salty are you right now in sharing the gospel are you flavorful around people you steal and to be thrown out what type of Christian are you in your daily life and he leaves this and I love this verse.
[00:10:05] Anyone who has ears to hear should listen understand so in other words he said when he say that you need to be listening this is powerful like these invitations that salvation on the line.
[00:10:19] You know us sharing the gospel and being salt of the earth and like those things are necessary anyone who has ears should listen.
[00:10:31] I don't know about you but this was a good reminder that there's a cause to be in a disciple and disciples have to share the word God and disciples have to lay down their life.
[00:10:44] If you look at how we've made it to Luke 14 and you see that disciples left everything I'm sure they had wives and families and you see that they were leaving their jobs.
[00:10:56] It may not look like oh I got to go quit my job to follow Jesus right now but you don't know what he's asking of you.
[00:11:03] What to give up one of the things that we have to give up is living in this world and it's looking like this world we are called to be holy celipus set apart.
[00:11:12] For the work of the kingdom and one this server was going out telling everybody about about this very banquet are you telling people that the banquet is ready like at any moment.
[00:11:25] Like we could hear the trumpet we could hear Jesus calling us home to let us be access to the banquet who you bring in with you to the banquet who you bringing to the table.
[00:11:37] You know a lot of times when you invite it to something you can bring a plus one who is your plus one I leave you with that that's your two who's your plus one who you're going to invite to the kingdom of God.
