Red Letter Day 30 Luke 17 Recap

[00:00:00] We must watch ourselves, tonight call someone to stumble, to forgive others, to obey

[00:00:11] Christ, to have genuine faith and await his return.

[00:00:49] On today's episode, we are in Luke 17 continuing on our red letter journey of seeing how Jesus speaks to us.

[00:01:00] Today's episode is very, very heavy because just like yesterday the reality of hell,

[00:01:09] the reality of His second coming and how there will be a great divide but it's also encouraging

[00:01:18] to the same point that we are to be waiting well, being an obedience, having faith,

[00:01:25] and encouraging others in this day.

[00:01:29] Okay, so in our text we see that Jesus is letting His disciples know that people are bound

[00:01:38] to sin but the one who causes the sin is the one who is in trouble to be thrown into a sea

[00:01:46] with a meal stone around his neck and drown.

[00:01:51] So therefore watch yourselves.

[00:01:54] I think it's very important to see that causing someone to stumble, Jesus takes very serious.

[00:02:01] So we need to be very careful on how we speak to people who are little in faith.

[00:02:08] This little one could be someone who is little in faith or it can be a young child

[00:02:13] according to some of the references and commentaries that I looked at.

[00:02:18] So next we see if a brother sins against you, you are to rebuke the sin.

[00:02:25] He is to repent of the sin and you are to forgive the sin.

[00:02:30] And if he does it seven times in one day then you are to forgive him seven times in one day.

[00:02:37] Seven is known to be the number of completion in the Bible.

[00:02:41] Our forgiveness is to be a complete forgiveness towards one another.

[00:02:48] The disciples then respond like basically like how can we do this?

[00:02:52] I mean this is hard to say to forgive somebody over and over so they are like increase our faith

[00:03:00] because it takes faith to forgive someone.

[00:03:03] And this is a large order and so the disciples say hey you know what?

[00:03:09] Increase our faith and Jesus replies with that you have faith as a muster seed

[00:03:15] so that you can say root to the small buried tree and it be planted into the sea

[00:03:22] and it will obey you.

[00:03:24] It is not a matter of the size of the faith, it is the matter of how genuine the faith is.

[00:03:33] Just a backup a second.

[00:03:34] I wrote a note that if you are having a hard time forgiving as a believer then something is out of alignment with God.

[00:03:42] We have to check our heart because even if the person has not repented of their sin to you,

[00:03:49] you still have a responsibility to forgive.

[00:03:52] Christ says that when we are praying if you have something to get someone,

[00:03:55] leave the altar and get up and deal with that matter so he takes our forgiveness

[00:04:00] of others very serious because he forgives us so therefore we ought to forgive others.

[00:04:05] Going through in verse 7 through 10, he gives this example of a servant.

[00:04:10] Just letting us know that we are to serve out of faith.

[00:04:13] It is our duty to serve Christ not for what we are going to get or in return what kind of rewards or blessing.

[00:04:19] Obedience is a duty.

[00:04:22] So on the way to Jerusalem Jesus is traveling between Samaria and Galilee

[00:04:27] and there are these ten men who have leprosy.

[00:04:30] And so it is said that when you have leprosy that it is very contagious they were not supposed to be near people.

[00:04:36] So from a distance they were calling out Jesus Master have pity on us.

[00:04:40] And so when he saw them he said go show yourself to the priest and as they went they were clans.

[00:04:47] We see here that Jesus never touched them, that he heals them with his word and we have seen that throughout our challenge in reading the book of Luke.

[00:04:56] Only one of them comes back in praises and thanks God and this one person was a Samaritan.

[00:05:02] Letting us know, constantly letting us know that the gospel is for everyone by identifying this man as a Samaritan.

[00:05:10] Jesus asked him, you know what they are not ten of y'all that got clansed and only one of y'all coming back and only the one that's coming is a foreigner.

[00:05:19] So he tells him to rise and go your faith has made you well.

[00:05:24] So not only was he healed physically he has now been healed spiritually and he has seen his salvation.

[00:05:30] The others had a physical healing but had they seen the salvation of the Lord as this one person who returned.

[00:05:38] Once they move on the Pharisees is asking when is the kingdom of God going to come?

[00:05:46] And they did not realize that the kingdom of God was with them among them in Jesus standing right there in front of them.

[00:05:54] And so he goes on to say, you know don't believe when people start to say here it is there it is for the kingdom of God is within you.

[00:06:03] He is right there and that there is going to be coming a time where people would say, you know, there he is here he is.

[00:06:10] He instructed them to not go running after them.

[00:06:14] That the Son of man in his day will be like lightning where it flashes and lights up the sky from one end to another.

[00:06:21] And that he must first suffer many things and be rejected by the generation.

[00:06:28] One point that I want to make that when Jesus comes his power and his presence will be seen by all.

[00:06:35] Just and then he gives these two things that has happened in the scripture to help us see that it will be a swift coming and it will be just like the days of Noah as he says.

[00:06:51] People will be eating drinking, marrying and giving into marriage just like the day that the flood happened when the ark was closed up.

[00:07:01] And just like with lot people were eating drinking, buying, selling, planting, building and the day that lot was rescue fire and sulfur rain down and destroy them all.

[00:07:13] And it will be just like this when the Son of man is revealed.

[00:07:17] There will be no warning, there will be no signal so we must not be attached to the things of this world when he returns.

[00:07:24] Normal daily life will be going on for us and those who fail to take God serious will see that.

[00:07:33] So on that day it says don't you want to be able to go back somebody who's on the roof can't go back in the house to get anything someone's in the field can't go back to get something remember lots of wife.

[00:07:47] There is nothing that you need to go back and get because your focus should be on Christ.

[00:07:52] Remember lots of wife lots of wife forfeited her escape the angel had told them what was going to happen but she still look back hanging onto the life that she had.

[00:08:01] So we must not be attached to worldly possessions or people because there will be no time to grab nothing so letting you know how swift and quick it will be.

[00:08:10] The word says like in the twinkling of an eye they fail to take heed to God's word and take him serious.

[00:08:16] So when that ark was closed up I said that before how many people was banging on the art.

[00:08:22] I mean how many people saw and smelled the fire in the suffer and knew that it was over for them in that moment.

[00:08:30] And in the same manner he's referring that this is what's going to happen again.

[00:08:36] That whoever tries to keep his life will lose it and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

[00:08:41] Then he says there will be two in one bed and one taken and one left to women grinding grain one taken and one left when he returns there will be no more chances.

[00:08:50] This is the final chance to seek Christ while he may be found.

[00:08:55] And so this has some cross references in that this can be interpreted as the rapture and first that's the lonience for 15 through 17 that it could be you know the believer being taken and the unbeliever being taken to judgment Matthew 1340 through 42.

[00:09:14] Either way people would be divided upon their relationship to God so they ask where Lord and his response was where the dead body and voters were gathered just as voters circle around a dead body and there's evidence that there is a dead body right there.

[00:09:29] There will be evidence in Christ second come and will be obvious to the whole world.

[00:09:34] So I want to ask you what worldly possessions are you holding on to? What are you looking back that's preventing you to look forward to Christ and having him as your Lord and Savior.

[00:09:45] There's going to come a day where you won't have a decision because you've already made a decision.

[00:09:49] And like I said in previous episodes to be undecided is to be decided will you decide to trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior today.
